BCI Cotton
Active Wear Productions supports the work of the Better Cotton Initiative. BCI Cotton is cotton made by cotton farmers & spinning mills that work together with the Better Cotton Initiative to improve the conditions of cotton production worldwide.
The problems in the cotton industry are plenty. From water shortages to the harsh working conditions of the farmers, there are many points of improvement. BCI partner producers need to meet certain standards in order to apply for partnership. One of the key conditions is full transparency and cooperating with monitoring. In some areas such as Central Asia and Western China the monitoring has become too difficult. In such case, producers in these regions will not be able to sell their cotton as BCI cotton.
BCI cotton does not necessarily mean that the cotton is organic. It means it’s from a partner producer that is dedicated to improvements along the way. Non-organic cotton is not necessarily bad cotton. Using modern farming methods, cotton can also be grown safely and sustainably without going organic. With the dedication of the BCI parter producers, a roadmap for improvement in the cotton industry has been made. With the support of brands & retailers buying BCI, the initiative can keep growing.
If you have a brand and would like to have BCI cotton used on your products, you will not need membership as long as you do not communicate it. If you would like to have BCI mentioned on your tags, it will be required that you get BCI membership. As a BCI member, you will be able to see the supply chain of your cotton products. On their website , you will be able to see where the cotton on your t-shirts was grown.
